EMSCOPE JOBS:
NSF/Earthscope through its subcontractors IRIS and Oregon State University (OSU) is funding the acquisition of 50 long-period, transportable array (TA) magnetotelluric (MT) stations this summer, 2009 (www.emscope.org). The sites are located in northwestern Wyoming and central Montana. The University of Utah in turn is subcontracted by OSU to permit, install and operate the MT TA stations and deliver the results to OSU for archival in the IRIS data management system.
U Utah is looking to hire up to six graduate or senior undergrad students to assist in the project for the late May through August time frame. The effort involves final site selection, permitting with landowners and public agencies, and site installation and operation. We envision 2 teams of 3 for the installation. Funding will be in the range $130-150 U.S. per student per day for the project. All travel out of SLC plus accommodation and per diem is supported by U Utah.
MT site locations are on a similar footprint distribution to the seismic TA with ~70 km average spacing. Each MT station will be deployed for ~3 weeks to obtain MT time series and transfer functions in the 20-20000 s period range approximately. Deployment will be out of 4x4 pickup trucks and considerable driving and motel stay is necessary. Students should be physically fit as installation involves carrying gear off road, and digging the site in with hand tools for stability and reduced visibility. Students will become trained as operators over the season, using the NIMS long-period MT instruments owned by IRIS.
Please contact me for more information if interested, and let me know the time frame of availability of your students. They are welcome to contact me directly. We would like to have the student personnel defined as soon as possible. Thank you.
Best regards,
Phil
